- For all the art talk and theory, an artist, regardless of their specific beliefs and cosmology, knows that when it goes well, the moment of making is a moment of grace, some kind of gift, a treasure and a privilege. This experience is as old as art is, although a lot of contemporary art talk belittles it. We, as artists, the kind that I mean, are not just content providers for... a luxury market, a network of institutions, a sophisticated discourse, and a social scene. We are, at our best, much more than that. What, then? I don't know, still. I just have a thread that I need to follow.
Time Casts Shadows

Edges soften or harden depending on the light source. Months merge to quick glimpses in the shadow of memory.Flashes are given sequence, and from the mind's turbulent puddle, we conjure up a stream.

Melody Has No Topic
The thing is, this tune isn’t really about anything I can put my finger on. I enter the world not knowing what I’ll find, and it never turns out as I’d anticipated. I certainly wasn’t looking for velvety, gleaming geometries, … Continue reading

Shawn Demarest’s plein-aire painting blog, with a bike trailer.
Just looking at a post on Shawn Demarest’s blog, from Portland, OR. An old friend from Boulder that I haven’t seen in many years, and she’s still making paintings and prints, heading out on a bike with a trailer for … Continue reading
Pleasures of Textures
We can look into intricate surfaces and find nearly anything. Leonardo advised artists to gaze into eroded wall surfaces, to explore how the mind makes images. A crystal ball twists and refracts the room’s reflections into surprising images. A trained, sensitive mind can find forms in its … Continue reading

The Living Carry the Dead
Continuing to pull one image after another from the archive, looking back at threads and continuities, and at how much has changed. None of us have come through this all alone, and as we celebrate the present and the future, … Continue reading
Illness and Waking
This guy, rising up from pools of brown ink, fits with my current state of mind as I begin to emerge from the delirious agony of stomach flu. Dreamlike states are not always the most pleasant place to be, as … Continue reading

The Visitor Learns to Play
The rules are complex, but eventually even the gawky thing gives it a try, at first with big girly kicks that don’t land. After a while, the tentacles become an asset, even in this gravity, because as awkward as they … Continue reading
